Anyone with allergies will tell you that when allergy season peaks in April, May, June, and September, it’s just a miserable time. With watery eyes, itching, and constant irritation, it can be extremely frustrating and uncomfortable.
But when you add glasses or contact lenses to the picture, the frustration increases. Lenses can trap pollen, but frames mean you’re constantly touching your face to adjust them and transferring allergens around your eyes.
Something we hear quite often at Laser Eye Centre is: Can I still get LASIK if I have hayfever or seasonal allergies? And the good news is that for many people, the answer is yes.
What You Need to Know About LASIK and Allergies
Seasonal allergies don’t automatically disqualify you from LASIK eye surgery. But timing and symptom management matter. Here are a few things you should keep in mind:
- Schedule around peak season. Ideally, LASIK eye surgery should be performed when your allergy symptoms are at their lowest. In North Alabama, this means excluding spring and early summer. Planning your procedure outside this window can make recovery more comfortable.
- Eye rubbing is the key risk. The issue with LASIK and allergies is that rubbing your eyes can displace the corneal flap created during surgery. Allergy sufferers especially need to be mindful of this during recovery.
- Dry eye overlap. Post-LASIK dryness and allergy-related dry eyes can share similar symptoms. It’s important to manage both, but Dr. Lee will assess your individual situation and recommend the right drops to manage both effectively.
For many allergy sufferers, LASIK eye surgery can offer long-term relief.
At Laser Eye Center, Dr. Danny Lee will evaluate each patient individually to ensure they are suitable for the surgery and that it is carried out at a safe time for surgery for optimal results.
