Can Cataracts Come Back After Surgery?

If you’re thinking about undergoing cataract surgery, it’s natural to ask the question, ‘Can cataracts come back after surgery?’ The simple answer is no, the cataract cannot grow back, but it is possible to experience symptoms, including cloudy vision, after treatment.

During cataract surgery, the cloudy natural lens is removed. In some cases, people develop blurred vision after the procedure due to posterior capsule opacification (PCO). In this guide, we’ll explain what happens during and after cataract surgery and why PCO can occur.

What are Cataracts and How Does Surgery Work?

Cataracts cause the lens of the eye to become cloudy, which makes your vision blurred and misty. It is common to develop cataracts in later life.

Cataract surgery involves removing the natural lens and replacing it with an intraocular lens implant (IOL).

Can cataracts return after surgery?

Once a cataract has been treated by removing the cloudy lens, it will not grow back. It is possible to develop symptoms similar to those associated with cataracts after surgery, including unclear and blurred vision. This may be due to PCO, sometimes called a secondary cataract.

Understanding PCO (Posterior Capsule Opacification)

PCO can occur in the weeks, months, or years following cataract surgery. It causes cloudy, fuzzy vision, but it is not the same as cataracts. It develops when the back of the lens capsule thickens, making it more difficult for light to travel through the eye. As well as blurred vision, you may also find that you’re more sensitive to bright lights.

Treating Posterior Capsule Opacification After Cataract Surgery

If you have symptoms of PCO, or you notice changes to your vision after cataract surgery, it’s important to see your eye doctor.

Your doctor will conduct a thorough evaluation to confirm or rule out PCO. In many cases, PCO can be treated effectively with an outpatient YAG laser capsulotomy. This procedure uses laser technology to create an opening in the clouded posterior capsule so light can pass through more clearly. Before a YAG laser capsulotomy, your doctor will explain what will happen and what to expect after treatment.
